Golf in Egypt

The official website of the Egyptian Tourist Authority states that Egypt has gone through some pretty big changes through the years. It says: “Since the end of the nineteenth century, Egypt has been evolving at a very high speed. Its political, economical and cultural life has undergone striking changes.”
This is very true. In fact, few are aware that Africa’s largest city is Cairo. Equally, few are aware that Egypt just happens to be climbing the golf destination ladder at a rather impressive pace, with more new courses and golf resorts in the pipeline. Pyramids Golf and Country Club, in fact, has plans for constructing 99 holes of golf in the near future. Currently, it makes do with 27.
One major attraction to golf in this corner of the world is the views, which are nothing short of spectacular. While you can play golf by the sea in Scotland, Ireland and across the pond in the United States, or experience golf in the foothills of beautiful mountains in a variety of countries, there is only one place in the world where you can play golf against the backdrop of the Pyramids.
The added bonus of Egypt is that it has perfect weather (at least for those who like it hot) and an endless stream of things to see and do before and after your golf. Cairo is one of the great cities of the world, after all, so you won’t be short on opportunities to experience something completely different.
There are a number of courses worth a visit, including the Gary Player-designed course at Soma Bay on the Red Sea. The Cascades Golf Resort, also on the Red Sea, is a fine test, as is Katameya Heights, one of the best-rated golf resorts in the country and just 20 minutes from Cairo airport.
So, if you are keen to top-up your golf holiday inspiration bank then there are few places that can do the job better. Egypt is a world away from standard holiday golf – and that’s part of the appeal.
