Home of the football World Cup champions on four occasions, the most recent win coming in 2006, Italy has never really enjoyed the same golfing profile – but all that is changing, and dramatically so.

Indeed, when the magnificent Emilia Romagna destination won the Emerging Golf Destination of the Year Award at the International Association of Golf Tour Operators awards in 2003, the rest of Europe sat up and took notice of the fact that Italy is quickly becoming one of the number one places to golf in the Continent.
Indeed, Emilia Romagna’s triumph drew attention to the wide-range of golfing opportunities that abound in the country.

Whether you like golfing by the sea, by the lakes, in close proximity to large towns or at a relaxing resort, there is choice aplenty to be had in Italy.

The best is, of course, found in Emilia Romagna. The region comprises towns including Bologna, Parma, Rimini and Piacenza and it’s home to a huge selection of courses. You really are spoilt for choice.

Perhaps the finest is Rimini, tucked away in the south of the region. It is laid out along the luxurious, fine and springy turf of the Valmarecchia park. From there, exceptional views of the neighbouring areas of San Marino, Verruchia and Torriana can be had, with Mount Carpegna lending some additional character to this stunning backdrop.

The Molino del Pero course in the Savena Valley, 25km from Bolgona, has been nicknamed the “Stairway to Heaven” such is the beauty encompassed within its sloping fairways. If you are lucky, you may even get the chance to see some deer or foxes as you plot your way around this spectacular course. The fairways and their surroundings are home to all sorts of fabulous wildlife.

Slightly further north and west of here, you will find Salsomaggiore Golf & Country Club, with lakes, oaks, poplars and all species of colourful shrubbery adding colour to the fine course.

Away from Emilia Romagna, more terrific golf courses can be found in regions such as Tuscany – where Ugolino and Montecatini are two of the most famous golfing tracts – and Rome, the capital city of the country, the outskirts of which are home to the Roma-Acquasanta, Parco De' Medici and Fiuggi golf courses.
