Golf in Qatar - Doha

FOLLOWERS of the European Tour will know all about Qatar as a golfing destination thanks to the tournament which has been staged there since 1998.

Doha Golf Club is the home of the Qatar Masters and some of the top players in the game on this side of the Atlantic head there every March to play a superb golf course as well as to enjoy some traditional Qatari hospitality.

The 7312-yard course, which is located in the West Bay Lagoon area about 20 kilometres from the centre of Doha, was designed by Peter Harradine and there are eight artificial lakes which help ensure that the 150 hectares of manicured fairways and superb greens are maintained to a standard that has won unanimous praise from both European Tour players and officials.

For anyone who would find the championship course too demanding, Doha Golf Club also offers a nine-hole Academy Course. It measures 2844 yards and is maintained to the same high standards as the main course.

There's also a state-of-the-art Golf Academy, where a multi-national team of PGA teaching professionals can help you get your game in shape before you venture out on to the first tee.
While Doha Golf Club is undoubtedly the jewel in Qatar's golfing crown, there are three other courses in the country and all are well worth a visit, too.

Messaieed Golf Club is one of the oldest golf courses in Qatar and boasts a medium-length course with fairways constructed from oiled and rolled sand. Players carry their own Astroturf square from which to drive and the "browns" are also formed of fine sand. This old style desert course offers a splendid location in which to play golf.

The course at Dukhan is quite similar to Messaieed, although on a slightly smaller scale, while Ras Abou Aboud, which is located near the Gulf Sheraton Hotel in Doha, is a nine-holer.
