Golf in Tenerife

With its excellent all year round climate and stunning golf courses that somehow seem to bask in glorious sunshine at all times, it is no revelation to suggest that Tenerife is a haven for golfers.

With six courses now welcoming golfers throughout the year, a new course designed by the legendary Severiano Ballesteros under construction, a new course on the neighbouring island of La Gomera and a number of other new projects in the pipeline, the island has joined the elite of world golfing destinations.

This volcanic stretch of land has an area of 2,057 square kilometres and is dominated by Spain's highest peak, Mount Teide, which towers above the island separating north from south and conferring upon each side a curiously different climate. If you happen to enjoy playing your golf in the company of beaming sunshine and glorious all-abounding scenery, then this island will suit you down to the ground.

The majority of the courses are situated in the southwest of the island, although the oldest course in Tenerife, RCG Tenerife, is in the north and well worth a visit. The Real Club de Golf Tenerife, in fact, is the second oldest course in Spain. Founded in 1932, it has a distinct British air about it, with the majority of holes running through tree-lined avenues of undulating fairways.
Great architects have tried their hand on the island's courses with great success. None more so than Donald Steel, who designed the Amarilla Golf Course, which opened in 1989. It has wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean and provides a stern test for the professional player as well as being enjoyable for those with more modest ability.

With the legendary Ballesteros currently drawing up plans for a course on the island, it seems his Ryder Cup sidekick, Jose Maria Olazabal, got there before him. The Centro de Golf Los Palos opened in December 1994 and has developed into a real favourite.

This is a nine-hole, par three course that was born under the tutelage of the former Master champion. It presents a stiff examination and is joined by a driving range, short game practice area and putting green. The resident teaching professional will iron out any problems you may have before you tackle the course, so be sure to put your name down for a quick lesson.

The first resort in Tenerife was Puerto de la Cruz, which has remained a smart, sophisticated town with many locals almost everyone you go, giving it an authentic Spanish atmosphere. There are superb holiday amenities and a range of quality hotels and nightlife ensuring it is an ideal stop-off point on your trip.

Countless tour operators specialize in organising golf holidays to the island and can tailor your tour to suit any specific needs. They can also arrange car hire for your group as soon as you step off the plane, allowing even greater flexibility during your stay.

Besides the golf, there is so much to see and do on the picturesque island. With huge black cliffs and small sandy beaches the coastline is spectacular. What's more, you can take your pick between popular resorts with a bustling nightlife or more laid back, idyllic Spanish hideouts. Either way, you won't be disappointed.
